Thu night TT results from Craig Heywood

PTT Cross Plains KP 5-07-09, 15K/9.3M or 26.3K/16.7M Course

Folks,

Nice night for a Time Trail. Nice warm, sunny, and fairly calm winds at the start. The wind always seems to die right as you turn around on this course. Good to see so many people out and some new faces. Jeff Otto continues to blaze new trails. His time today is one of the fastest if not the fastest for this course. Considering how bad/bumpy the road is Jeff's time is remarkable. John Harper set the record, way back in the olden days on a standard road framed bike with friction shifting, when the road was about 1/4 to 1/3 new smooth blacktop. I need to hunt more in my storage shed to find more paperwork of previous events before I can confirm Jeff's time as a new record. June will be the last time to do the Cross Plains KP course this year before road construction starts on Hwy 14 in mid June, which will increase the traffic on KP to unacceptable levels. Remember you can always do two man, or other combinations of team time trials if you wish. Do not forget you can also do tandems, track bikes, etc... Thanks to the UpHill Grind Bike/Coffee Shop for the drink coupons tonight. Besides great coffee, lattes, smoothies, etc... they do serve Gatorade and other sports drinks in dry mix form by single serve pouches or by the scoop to mix in your water bottle. They have cold filtered water available if you need to fill up your water bottle. Next week 5-14-09 at Paoli, PB. See you there.

Thursday 5-14-09 Paoli, PB Time Trial

Folks,

Another fine day, nice cool and calm, for time trialing, unfortunately marred by a needless crash. Everyone is up and about but equipment has been wrecked and totaled. As you all must know one of the member of the Tri group that started in the middle of our group turned in front of one of our TT riders. They were going to do a U Turn (illegal) in the middle of the road when our TT rider hit them. Luckily it was just a bicyclist and not a vehicle or the result could have been deadly. If the Tri group had just waited five minutes they all would have been behind us. If they had turned onto the road just after the bridge and then turned around there would have been no problem. I hate to have to remind people to OBEY TRAFFIC LAWS but it constantly needs to be said. I know I push things once and awhile myself but we all need to do a better job of being seen, being predictable, obeying the rules of the road, being aware of our position on the road at all times, etc., etc...... It does not matter who you are you are just in the vehicles way. Most motorist would just as soon see no bicyclist on "their" roads. Let's not give them any reason to feel this way. Be polite, wave, smile, say nice things, obey the rules of the road, stop with one foot down at stop signs and traffic lights (the law), use a light at night, ride the direction of traffic, use the proper hand signals to indicate turns, use an audible signal to warn when overtaking other uses of roads and paths, and the list could go on. We all know what to do but just fail as it is "easier" not to do the right thing. This is why I want the turn around at the stop sign. To name a few, traffic is slowest or stopped, more awareness because it is an intersection, easy to remember, etc., etc...... Nuff Said, Be Safe.

The turn around for Sun Valley is where Sun Valley and StoryTown and Hwy D meet, kind of a bent Y shaped intersection. Some like to go all the way to the stop sign at Hwy D, just a few feet more as they like to use the slight down hill there to help reaccelerate themselves. Where ever you turn just be safe, Thanks.

Thursday, 5-21-09, Paoli, Sun Valley Time Trial. 10.4K/6.5 M. Folks,

The course is 6.5 miles or 10.4 Kilometers. I said 6.7 miles but must have thinking of the Cross Plains KP Mazo course of 16.7 miles, so everyone is 3% faster right off the bat. Good day for time trailing with some fast times. Anything under 20 minutes for this course is a good time. Those doing it in the 15 minute range are doing it very well. Jeff Otto had a 15.07, on 8-21-08, so the wind did have an affect on the times or was it just more miles in over the summer?? A little cloudy and windy (N 15-20 MPH) steady wind at least. Hilly course, three big ones, three little ones, turn around and do it all over again. I hear Dave Sieloff is doing well, he was involved in a bike vs bike crash last week. Banged up but up and walking. Hopeful for a speedy and complete recovery. Not sure who has heard but there was an accident at the Track in Kenosha, WI this week and a rider died, head injury plus. Do not know the details, just heard it from a reliable source on Thursday night, so again please be careful out there. Bike riding/racing is safe for the most part, more people get hurt in their homes and driving a car, than by riding a bike but it does give us pause to think. Be predictable. use hand/turn signals. look and then look again, error on the safe side, smile, say nice things, wave (with the full hand and all five fingers), use a light at night, obey all traffic laws, wear your helmet and make sure it fits properly, do the right things even if it takes a little more effort. Ride the big gears and have FUN!!!
